Climate change is now a scientifically established fact. Climate change is the most important issue whole over the world. With this change possible economic impacts has been showing the great concern in present climate change research. Climate change will impact multiple sectors especially on coastal resources and on economy with implications for poverty reduction, employment generation, and urbanization. This book, therefore, provides estimation procedure of biological parameters, maximum sustainable yield, maximum economic yield and open access equilibrium by the Gordon-Schafer surplus production model and how could make assumption with possible economic impacts of climate change. The model has also been studied under nine climate scenarios where assuming each represents possible climate change consequences. The analysis should help to find out the potential of climate effects for changing the intrinsic growth rate, carrying capacity, profitability on fishery resources and should be especially useful to professionals in climate change science or anyone else who maybe consider to do further scientific research on possible economic climate change impacts.

Small-scale fisheries has been playing a great role in Tanzania in terms of household incomes. However, due to competition in the fishery industry, small-scale Nile Perch fishers have been the losers while the Gear owners in the industry have been the winners. The study has come with some mixed results showing different ways through which fishers are monthly paid in the two fishing beaches that were of interest in this study namely Kijiweni and Igombe fishing beaches. Fishermen in Kijiweni beach had an absolute advantage in income generation both during high and low catch seasons over Igombe fishing beach. But sill they were not getting higher income as their gear owners who employed them. This study intends to benefit all stakeholders that are involved in the fishery sector including fishers themselves, policy makers at both the central and local government levels with view to improving the performance of the the fishery sector in Tanzania and in particular the Small-scale fisheries.

This book explores how we can solve the urgent problem of optimizing the use of variable, uncertain but finite fisheries resources while maintaining sustainability from a marine-ecosystem conservation perspective. It offers readers a broad understanding of the current methods and theory for sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources, and introduces recent findings and technological developments. The book is divided into three parts: Part I discusses fish stock dynamics, and illustrates how ecological processes affecting life cycles and biological interactions in marine environments lead to fish stock variability in space and time in major fish groups, small pelagic fish, demersal fish and large predatory fish. These insights shed light on the mechanisms underlying the variability in fish stocks and form the essential biological basis for fisheries management. Part II addresses the technologies and systems that monitor changes in fisheries resources and marine ecosystems using two approaches: fishery-dependent and fishery-independent data. It also describes acoustic surveys and biological sampling, as well as stock assessment methods. Part III examines management models for effectively assessing the natural variability in fisheries resources. The authors explore ways of determining the allowable catch in response to changes in stock abundance and how to incorporate ecological processes and monitoring procedures into management models. This book offers readers a broad understanding of sustainable exploitation as well as insights into fisheries management for the next generation.

Fisheries sector plays an important role in the Indian economy. It contributes to the national income, exports, food and nutritional security and in employment generation. In hilly region, fish culture has been one of the important economic activities. Besides being a good source of nutritious diet, rich in animal protein, fishery also provides a good employment to a large number of rural populations. Fish farming is a potent source which can generate an additional income and employment for all the fish farmers. The major policy implications of the study are the need to follow proper pond management practices like cleaning, weeding, removal of predatory fishes, unwanted aquatic weeds and aquatic insects at right stage of the fish farming. Timely supply and easy accessibility of fish seeds of Indian major carps as well as exotic carps, suitable for cold water climate should be made available to fish farmers in required quantity. Efficient fish marketing network and infrastructure should be developed in the study area, so that fish farmers may get remunerative price for their fish product.

Reservoirs are specific aquatic ecosystems and have complex behaviors of both natural lakes and rivers, regulated significantly by their functions such as flood controlling, hydropower generation, irrigation and fishery. This volume offers a general description of reservoir limnology in tropical and subtropical China. It functions as a window opening to all the aquatic scientists with a main focus on reservoirs in southern China and at the same time also covering several important, large reservoirs such as the Three Gorge Reservoir and Danjiangko Reservoir. Topics discussed are zooplankton, phytoplankton and zoobenthos communities, cyanobateria, nutrient budget, sediments, biogeochemical cycling of mercury, fishery and eutrophication.

A Fishery Manager′s Guidebook

Fisheries around the world make essential contributions to human well-being including the provision of basic food supplies, employment, recreational opportunities, foreign currency and others, providing benefits to hundreds of millions of people. Despite these benefits, our record of managing fisheries so that the benefits can be sustained has been poor, at best, and most fisheries around the world are experiencing serious ecological, social or economic problems and usually all three. Today there is global concern about the state of fishery resources and aquatic ecosystems, their resilience to future stresses such as climate change and their ability to continue to provide benefits. Fisheries management is the process that has evolved to try to ensure that fisheries operate in a manner that provides the immediate benefits in a sustainable manner. The widely accepted goal is that the full range of benefits should not only be available for this generation but for generations to come. Fisheries management has been successful in some cases but there have also been many, many cases of failure. This volume is intended to contribute to improving this unsatisfactory state by addressing the widespread need for information and guidance on the broad and often complex task of fisheries management. It is an updated and expanded edition of the first version of 'A fishery manager's guidebook' which was published as a FAO Fisheries Technical Paper in 2002. The major part of this new edition is divided into five parts intended to cover the range of concerns, tools and techniques essential to the modern fisheries manager, whether that manager is an individual or a formal or informal group. Following the Introduction: * Part I examines the primary dimensions of fisheries: biological, ecological, social and economic * Part II looks at the legal and institutional characteristics of fisheries * Part III explores the tools that fishery managers have to achieve the objectives expected from a fishery * Part IV discusses the role of scientific information of indicators and reference points * Part V moves into implementation of fisheries management and includes a chapter on special considerations in small-scale fisheries This landmark publication is aimed at fishery managers and scientists. All libraries in research establishments and universities where fisheries and aquatic sciences are studied and taught will need copies of this important volume.
